Best Moisturizer for DSNW Baumann Skin Type®

best moisturizer for dsnw baumann skin type

Baumann Skin Type DSNW® is one of the more challenging skin types, since it has several different characteristics that need to be addressed in your skin care regimen. The DSNW skin type is characterized by dryness, sensitivity, non-pigmentation, and wrinkles. This skin type has an impaired barrier, so using the proper barrier repair moisturizer is crucial, along with anti-inflammatory and anti-aging ingredients.

Although your DSNW skin is complex, it can be managed with consistent use of the right skin care ingredients, which you can discuss with a Skin Type Solutions physician in your area. In the meantime, this article provides an overview of your DSNW Baumann Skin Type® and products and ingredients to look for to achieve healthy, beautiful skin.

What Is the DSNW Skin Type?

Your DSNW skin is Dry, Sensitive, Non-Pigmented, and Wrinkle-Prone. Because its protective barrier is impaired, your skin has trouble holding onto water and keeping irritants and allergens out. Dryness and inflammation can contribute to signs of aging like lines and wrinkles. Therefore, the first step is to repair your skin’s barrier, which in turn will help to rehydrate your skin and protect it from harmful substances that could trigger an inflammatory response.

The good news is that your non-pigmented skin tends to be smooth and even, so your main treatment products are aimed at reducing wrinkles.

What Moisturizer Is Best for DSNW Skin?

Your dry, sensitive skin has a weakened barrier, so you need to use a barrier repair moisturizer such as Zerafite™ Soothing and Calming Moisturizer, which contains ingredients that improve each of the barriers to skin health for your DSNW skin.

Zerafite contains barrier repair ingredients that combat dry skin by helping your natural skin barrier function properly. Some of the best barrier repair ingredients that you’ll find in Zerafite brand moisturizers include:

  • Myristoyl/palmitoyl oxostearamide/arachamide mea, or MLE technology, which uses a 1:1:1 ratio of fatty acids, ceramides, and cholesterol to mimic the natural lipid structure of healthy skin.
  • Stearic acid, which is the best fatty acid for barrier repair
  • PEG-15 glyceryl stearate
  • Glyceryl stearate
  • Glycerin, which is a very effective humectant ingredient
  • Vitamin E (tocopherol), argan oil, and grapeseed oil, which are great occlusive ingredients

Humectants like glycerin pull in moisture from the air or deeper layers of skin, adding moisture to the skin’s surface. However, dry skin types like DSNW should combine humectants with occlusive ingredients like argan oil and grapeseed oil to seal in this moisture and prevent skin dehydration. When the air is dry, humectants will draw moisture from deeper skin layers to the surface, where they can easily evaporate if not sealed in using an occlusive.

Both humectants and occlusives provide temporary relief from dry skin, which is why other barrier repair ingredients like fatty acids, ceramides, and cholesterol are crucial. On their own, humectants and occlusives will not repair a damaged skin barrier.

Zerafite Soothing and Calming Moisturizer also has anti-inflammatory ingredients like argan oil, also called argania spinosa kernel oil, and grapeseed oil, listed as vitis vinifera. Antioxidants like niacinamide and allantoin help to reduce and prevent signs of skin aging caused by inflammation and free radicals. I like niacinamide a lot because it gives cells energy to repair DNA damage and damage from free radicals, in addition to having anti-inflammatory properties.

The great thing about your DSNW skin is that it is even-toned and does not need skin lightening. The goal is to keep your complexion even, which can be done by keeping inflammation at bay. The ingredients listed above will help to prevent unwanted pigmentation.

Anti-inflammatory and antioxidant ingredients will help to reduce and prevent aging skin. Vitamin E (tocopheryl acetate) and ubiquinone (also called coenzyme Q10) are great antioxidants because they help cell mitochondria make energy (ATP).

Additionally, lifestyle factors play a major role in the development of wrinkles. Do your best to avoid prolonged sun exposure, avoid tanning beds, and wear sunscreen! If your sensitive skin does not tolerate chemical sunscreens well, choose a physical sunscreen like EltaMD Physical, which contains zinc oxide and is appropriate for all 16 Baumann Skin Types®.
