Hair is a hot topic. Most of us deal with having too much in some places and too little in others, and I’m willing to bet there’s a lot you don’t know. As a dermatologist, I’m trained in all things related to hair, skin and nails, and here’s some little known tips to get more beautiful hair.
1.) Use Viviscal
Very few products and treatments (including lasers, shampoos and supplements) have the ability to boost hair growth. However, I have performed studies on Viviscal Professional and have seen amazing results in three to six months. It contains a protein that hair needs in order to grow, and it’s sold mainly by dermatologists. (The professional version is different than the one you can buy online.)
2.) After stress, dieting, or pregnancy, if you experience hair loss, consider using Rogaine
Rogaine can help hair loss caused by the aforementioned situations: stress, dieting, post-pregnancy, or a short-term problem that has been resolved.
This is because there is a close tie between hormones and hair growth. Our hair follicles change during puberty and pregnancy due to hormones. The base of the hair follicles is home to stem cells that regulate hair growth. When stress hormones take over, the stem cells are less active, and more of the hair follicles enter the telogen (fall-out) phase.
Hair loss or thinning is also very common around menopause, but doctors still don’t completely understand the role estrogen plays. This type of hair loss appears to have a genetic link, and it’s more resistant to treatment.
3.) Avoid extreme dieting
Extreme dieting and exercise can lead to hair loss. Lack of essential protein affects the hair and nails, and this is often accompanied by brittle nails and extremely dry hair.
4.) Know what health conditions and medications may cause hair loss
It’s normal for 15% of hairs to be in the telogen (fall-out) phase at any given time, but if you get sick, have a high
fever, thyroid disease or anemia, or you eat too much selenium, your hair may begin to thin. This condition is called telogen effluveum.
5.) Talk to your physician if certain medications are causing hair loss
Certain medications can cause hair loss—including antidepressants birth control, and especially statin cholesterol-lowering drugs. Some doctors may say that thyroid and diabetes medications lead to hair thinning or loss, but these medical conditions are actually the root cause of hair problems.
Bottom Line
If you’re experiencing any problems like hair loss or thinning, a dermatologist is the best professional to see. It’s important to have blood drawn in order to rule out anemia, thyroid disease, low iron levels and other medical causes. Dermatologists are also trained to look for other symptoms on the skin and nails that can help identify the cause of hair loss.
