How to Speed Recovery after Botox

Botox is known as a “lunchtime procedure” because it typically takes less than 20 minutes to perform and requires little to no downtime afterwards. That means that you can go ahead and schedule your Botox appointment during your lunch break because you’ll be fine to return to work immediately afterwards. I am frequently asked how to reduce the risk of bruising after Botox injections. There are a few caveats to Botox recovery and following these four simple, yet effective tips in the few days following your procedure can ensure smooth results and a speedy recovery.

1. Avoid heat

For the first 24 hours after your Botox treatment try to avoid hot showers, baths and other forms of heat. Heat makes the blood vessels dilate increasing your chance of bruising.  Botox treatments use a tiny needle about the size of an insulin syringe that diabetics use daily (So they are made to be virtually painless). They are so small that bruising does not usually occur. However, anytime you puncture the skin with a needle there is a chance of bruising. Avoiding heat for the first day will greatly reduce your risk of bruising post injections. If you decide to apply ice to the area, only leave it or for 20 seconds or less in a particular area. I have seen so many patients burn their skin by overfreezine it with ice. In fact, I prefer that you do not use ice at all.

2. Avoid Strenuous Exercise for 24 Hours

Although there’s no real “downtime” associated with Botox, it’s still a good idea not to run a marathon or go bungee jumping for at least the first day. You might notice some redness, swelling, or mild bruising during this time, so avoiding strenuous activity can help to keep you comfortable while your body continues to recover. This also gives the product enough time to “settle” so that your results don’t move or become uneven.

3. Don’t Rub the Injection Site

Again, you don’t want to stimulate any movement near the injection site for the first day or so after your Botox session, as this can negatively affect your final results (which should be visible within 2 to 7 days). Avoid massaging or rubbing these areas for optimum results.

4. Refrain from Using NSAIDs or Blood Thinners

Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, or NSAIDs, can thin your blood, which may lead to bruising. These medications include Advil, Motrin, Aleve and aspirin. Avoid taking these drugs or any other blood thinners for at least the first 24 hours after your injectable procedure, and be sure to let your doctor or clinician know of any current medications you’re taking prior to getting Botox to ensure your safety and best results.

In Summary

One of the biggest benefits of getting Botox to help combat fine lines and wrinkles on the face is that it’s a pretty convenient treatment to schedule and maintain. While it’s possible that redness, swelling or bruising may occur, these side effects are typically mild and should subside on their own over the first few hours or days. Generally speaking, you shouldn’t have to worry about rescheduling any of your normal daily activities on the day of your Botox treatment, but keep in mind that you will want to take it easy. If at any time during your recovery you have questions or concerns, don’t hesitate to contact your doctor or clinician.
