Dr. Leslie Baumann MD, FAAD
Dr. Leslie Baumann MD, FAAD is an internationally renowned board-certified dermatologist, researcher, bestselling author, and entrepreneur. She is passionate about improving skin health by changing the way people shop for skin care. She is a frequent lecturer on Skin Types, Skin Care Products, Skin Care Routines, Cosmeceutical Ingredients, and Skin Care Regimens.
The third edition of her textbook Cosmetic Dermatology (McGraw Hill) was released in March 2022 and is the best-selling Cosmetic Dermatology book in the world.
DERMATOLOGIST:
Dr. Baumann attended Baylor College of Medicine (1989-1994) before moving to Miami for a dermatology residency at the University of Miami. In 1997, she founded and directed the first Academic Cosmetic Dermatology Research Institute in the Unites States that became internationally famous when it was involved in the development of the use of Botox® for facial wrinkles. She was a Professor of Dermatology at the University of Miami and Director of the University of Miami Cosmetic Medicine and Research Institute in 2009, when she left the University of Miami. She founded the Baumann Cosmetic & Research Institute (BCRI) which continued her successful dermatology practice and expanded her research endeavors on cosmetic procedure innovations seeking FDA approval.
In 2019, she sold BCRI to a private equity firm but continues to see patients and conduct clinic research trials. She is a Fellow of the prestigious American Dermatological Association, member of the American Academy of Dermatology and board-certified by the American Board of Dermatology.
RESEARCHER:
Dr. Baumann’s clinical trial research has been instrumental in the FDA approval of most cosmetic injectables on the market including Botox, Dysport, Jeauveau, Kybella, Voluma, Sculptra, Juvéderm, Restylane Silk, and Restylane Contour.
The Baumann Skin Typing System that she described is now used by dermatologists worldwide to prescribe skin care routines. The research data gathered through her skin care routine software is being used to develop machine learning algorithms to facilitate customization of skin care. Dr. Baumann holds 4 patents on methods to improve the skin’s health and appearance.
AUTHOR:
Dr. Leslie Baumann authored the very first textbook on the subject of Cosmetic Dermatology (McGraw Hill, 2002 and 2009). This bestselling book has been translated into 8 languages and became the most widely used cosmetic dermatology textbook around the world. The 3rd edition published in March 2022 and will soon be in Indonesian, Russian, Chinese, and Turkish.
Her second textbook, Cosmeceuticals and Cosmetic Ingredients (McGraw Hill, 2014) is an encyclopedia of cosmeceutical ingredients used by aestheticians, cosmetic chemists and dermatologists worldwide.
For over 20 years she has written a monthly column Cosmeceutical Critique in the trade newspaper Dermatology News that discusses the science of skin care ingredients.
Dr. Baumann has authored over 250 medical publications.
Dr. Baumann authored the New York Times bestseller, The Skin Type Solution (2005) which described the 16 Baumann Skin Types® for the first time and was the subject of a 2010 PBS special called The Skin Type Solution. She was the dermatologist blogger for Yahoo Health from 2007- 2010 and has authored a twice-monthly column for The Miami Herald Newspaper for almost 2 decades. Her blog LeslieBaumannMD.com and her content featured in the Skin Care Guide at the Skin Type Solutions Library empower consumers to make good choices about skin care and cosmetic procedures.
She is a recognized key opinion leader and has over 50,000 followers on social media (@Baumanncosmetic. @DrSkinguru,@LeslieBaumannMD, and @Skintypesolutions and Linked In) where she shares content about the latest news and science in the cosmeceutical and dermatology fields.
ENTREPRENEUR:
Dr. Baumann is CEO of Skin Type Solutions Franchise Systems LLC which licenses software to physicians to scientifically customize skincare regimens based on 16 Baumann Skin Types® . This system is included in the major dermatology and plastic surgery textbooks. The Skin Type Solutions software is used by over 230 doctors to prescribe efficacious skincare regimens and educate and motivate their patients.
Dr. Baumann is on the Beauty Council for the VC firm Swiftarc Ventures that invests in women founded beauty and wellness brands. She mentors young entrepreneurs who need guidance in product development, IP law, human resources, corporate culture, branding, marketing, and sales. She is also an Operating Partner for Shore Capital, a private equity firm that invests in Medi-spas.
NOT FOR PROFIT ACTIVITIES:
Dr. Baumann served on the board of Girls Inc of Greater Miami in 2020. This nonprofit organization mentors at risk girls through social and emotional learning activities that encourage them to be strong, smart, and bold. She is also a member of 100+ Women Who Care Miami Beach that raises funds for local charities.
PERSONAL INTERESTS:
Dr Baumann is the mother of two sons that help keep her current on music and pop culture. She collects vintage skincare products and cosmetic advertisements and is fascinated with the history of the skin care industry. She spends her free time in cardio dance, yoga, pilates classes, and occasionally golf. Dr. Baumann loves to cook, oil paint and is an avid reader of fiction and nonfiction with a special interest in Marcel Proust, 19th century literature and 17th century Dutch Art. She loves mentoring young entrepreneurs in all different fields.
