Prepare for That Holiday Hangover with These Skin Care Tips

holiday hangover skin care tips

‘Tis the season for holiday dinners, parties, and get-togethers with family and friends. Just in case you over-indulge in the spiked eggnog and stay up later than usual, keep these skin care tricks in mind to refresh your look the next morning.

1. Camouflage with Concealer

One of the quickest fixes for a little too much holiday fun the night before is using a good concealer. Jane Iredale has a kit with several different colors that can be blended to cover bruises, hickeys, and dark circles under the eyes.

Acne blemish concealer is another must-have for the morning after. Look for a stick or wand that contains sulfur and a concealer to cover and treat a pimple in a pinch.

If you wake up in the morning with a pimple, it is best to leave it alone and try to conceal it. If you absolutely have to pop a pimple, follow these steps to make sure you do it correctly:

  1. Make sure the pimple has a clearly-defined whitehead. If not, it is not safe to pop.
  2. Wash your hands.
  3. Hold a warm cloth over the pimple for three to five minutes.
  4. Use two cotton swabs on either side of the pimple to gently press it. If the pimple doesn’t pop with gentle pressure, stop.
  5. Apply a salicylic acid spot treatment to the area.

2. Apply Argan Oil

Argan oil is rich in both linoleic acid and oleic acids, making it an excellent skin care ingredient to help fight inflammation and acne and increase the moisture level of dry skin. Use a product like PAORR (which stands for “powerful antioxidant oil” and is pronounced “power”) on your skin before going to bed after an evening out. (Secret tip-  You can buy PAORR OIl that is only sold by doctors using my doctor’s code DRB). The anti-inflammatory properties of pure argan oil will help to reduce inflammation, redness, and breakouts caused from too much alcohol, emotions, and friction (those beard burns can really make you red!)

Dry skin types can benefit from making argan oil a part of their regular skin care regimen, since it has been shown to decrease transepidermal water loss (TEWL) and increase the moisture content of the skin. Other studies have found argan oil to have an anti-aging effect on the skin as well.

3. Try GCP Cleanser

GCP Pre and Post Procedure cleanser has many different uses. One way to use this product is to put a bit up your nose so you kill germs that you breathe in (I like to use it before flying on an airplane), and use it under your arms and on your feet to kill odor-causing bacteria.

This product is suitable for all 16 Baumann Skin Types® and will preserve your skin’s natural barrier function while killing germs.

4. Make a Blueberry and Pomegranate Juice Smoothie in the Morning

Don’t forget that the foods you eat have an impact on the way your skin looks and feels. Add some blueberries and POM pomegranate juice to your morning smoothie, along with some kale and spinach to help control inflammation and acne from excesses of the holidays. Other anti-inflammatory foods and drinks that are great for your skin are:

  • Citrus fruits
  • Apples
  • Swiss chard
  • Tomatoes
  • Carrots
  • Celery
  • Almonds
  • Walnuts
  • Olive oil
  • Salmon
  • Turmeric
  • Cinnamon
  • Ginger
  • Green tea

5. Build Your Skin Barrier

Having a healthy and functioning skin barrier is so important in maintaining beautiful, healthy-looking skin. Strengthen your skin’s barrier so that friction – such as kissing someone with a five o’clock shadow under the mistletoe – will cause less injury to your skin. To do this, use a creamy cleanser like NIA 24 or PCA, followed by Zerafite Barrier Repair Moisturizer. This step is especially important if temperatures are below 50ºF where you live.

Drinking too much alcohol also dehydrates our bodies and skin, which can be an even bigger problem for people who have dry skin to begin with. A barrier repair moisturizer that contains equal parts ceramides, fatty acids, and cholesterol will not only replenish skin hydration but will also repair your skin’s ability to hold onto moisture.

In Summary

Preventing breakouts, dry skin, and dark undereye circles is the easiest way to keep smooth, healthy-looking skin, but that can be difficult during the busy holiday season. Whether you drank a little too much alcohol or stayed up too late wrapping Christmas presents, these skin care tips can help you look and feel your best the next day.
